Prototype and Production Trailers Designed with JDID for FORT Campers

Overlanding and other ways to get away from society have become more common since COVID. Even before the pandemic, our client realized there was a need for more options, as the waitlist for most rugged camping trailers exceeded two years.

Our benchmark was the Turtleback Getaway. It has a traditional side hinged main box lid, rear hinged front box lid, and large rear door with pull out kitchen.

1.

Streamlined cowling between front and main boxes

2.

Side access door with fridge storage drawer

We sought ways to reduce weight, increase accessibility, and maximize production efficiency.

A complicated cowling and single purpose lid became an easily accessible tray that maintains plenty of storage.

The traditional side lifting top was replaced with a drawer system to save weight, cost, and manufacturing time.

A single hinged mount was replaced with two stronger hinges. This allows for heavy bike racks and other add-ons to be added to the swing gate.

I kept the CAD database current by using blocks in SolidWorks to edit all parts in an assembly with only a handful of linked drawings.
