Game & Shot Controllers
Designed with JDID for Scorevision
The handheld shot and game clock controllers are comfortable to hold, balanced, and work in unison with the hub. Their minimalist form may have been the result of a quick testing phase spurred on by a very tight deadline, but JDID and Scorevision were quite pleased with the result.
Mock-ups
With a quick turnaround in mind, I modeled and 3D printed a variety of basic “remote” shapes. Not very thrilling, but we needed a platform from which we could add and subtract material to find an ideal, scaleable form. Each print was created without an intended orientation. They were shipped to the client with directions to send us photos of their preferred way to hold each option.
Form Direction
The chosen design was quite simple. It was comfortable to hold for adult hand sizes, and was easily scalable to suite the still developing internals.
Test Run
The initial run for school testing was 3D printed. Once the internals were confirmed we ordered SLA prints with high quality paint finishes, and had custom decals made. We did the assembly in house and shipped to Scorevision.
Injection Molding DFM
Even a simple two-part shell can come with complications. We thought it would be pretty simple, but a DFM analysis caught some issues with thick walls that would have resulted in sink marks along the side. Our solution was to add “finger pockets” along the sides. Fortunately for us, we were able to make them look intentional.
